I run infrastructure and spend most of my attention on the security side of it. Fifteen years, starting in a data centre where I racked machines and learned Linux because there was nobody else to ask. I am not a researcher and I do not find novel vulnerabilities; what I am good at is the boring, cumulative work — patching on a schedule, knowing what is actually running, making sure the logs would tell you if something happened. Most incidents I have seen were not clever. They were something unpatched that nobody had inventoried.

Rebuilt log collection and alerting after an incident took four days to reconstruct because half the evidence had rotated away.
