I look after the parts of a system that are nobody's feature: the clusters, the pipelines that build things, the reason a deploy at four in the afternoon is not frightening. I came into it sideways from a support desk, which I think made me better at the job than a straight route would have, because I spent two years watching what actually breaks. Most of what I do is deletion — old environments, unused services, three ways of doing a thing reduced to one. I am not especially interested in new platforms and I am very interested in whether the on-call phone rings. Outside work I run a small game server for friends and have spent more time automating it than playing on it.

Our seven-person game server was running twenty-four hours a day for about six hours of use a week, so I made it learn our habits and switch itself off.

Spent four months finding out why an analytics environment cost what it did, and then removing about half of it.

Merged nine separately-grown clusters into three, without asking the teams that owned the workloads to rewrite anything.
